Hokule'a and her crew are voyaging through the Pacific Ocean and are now one step closer to returning to Hawaii.

Navigators on the canoe left Rapa Nui over the weekend. It was another stop on their worldwide, Malama Honua voyage.

While in Rapa Nui, members of the Hokule'a shared the culture of Hawaii and discussed sustainability efforts with the local community and lawmakers.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our shared commitment to preserving traditions, values, and environment, but also to discuss the challenges that we face in light of changes to our ocean and well-being as island people," Bruce Blankenfeld, captain of the Hokulea said.

It was the first time the Hokule'a returned to Rapa nui since her 1999 voyage.

The crew is now en route to the Pitcairn Islands which is a cluster of volcanic islands and atolls in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is the last British Overseas territory in the Pacific.

Following the Pitcairn Island visit, the Hokule'a will head to the Marquesas Islands and to Tahiti.

The crew is set to return home to Hawaii on June 17.
