(RNN) – USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny resigned Thursday after claims that the organization responded slowly to sex abuse allegations.
Steve Penny served as president of USA Gymnastics since 2005. He joined the organization in 1999.
"My decision to step aside as CEO is solely to support the best interests of USA Gymnastics at this time," Penny said in a statement to the Associated Press.
The U.S. Olympic Committee pressured the USA Gymnastics president and CEO to resign.
Citing anonymous sources, USA Today reported the USOC wanted Penny to resign so the body could move forward amid a sex abuse scandal.
USA Today reports more than 80 gymnasts have accused former USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse.
Nassar was team doctor at four Olympics from 1996 to 2015.
He is currently jailed and faces federal charges related to child pornography possession.
He also faces state charges connected to allegations by a family friend who said she was sexually abused by him as a child. Michigan State Attorney General Bill Schuette called Nassar’s actions in that case “predatory, menacing, criminal acts.”
