HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A 3-year-old girl was struck and killed by a vehicle in the parking lot of a Pu'u'eo apartment complex on Tuesday, Big Island police said.
She was identified as Kawenalanionapua Low-Hopeau.
Authorities say they responded to a distress call at the Hilo Val Hala Apartments just prior to 6:30 p.m. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered that the toddler had been hit by a vehicle and was unresponsive.
Police said a Ford SUV was traveling north through the parking lot of the apartment complex and struck the girl.
First responders performed CPR at the scene. The girl was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver, a 66-year-old Hilo woman, was not injured.
When asked about the circumstances surrounding the collision, fire department officials said they were currently unable to provide further information, though one department spokesperson said that the scene was "volatile." Witnesses also described the scene as chaotic.
Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors.
