HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Board of Education member resigned on Monday because he plans on applying for Kathryn Matayoshi's seat as Department of Education superintendent.
Darrel Galera has been with the BOE since October 2016.
"It is essential that the BOE's search and selection committee be presented with as large a pool of experienced, qualified and committed applicants as possible, as it makes one of the most important decisions for the future of public education in Hawaii," Galera said, in a statement.
The former high school principal was appointed to Gov. David Ige's Every Student Succeeds Act in April 2016.
In late October, BOE Chairman Lance Mizumoto announced Matayoshi would be replaced when her contract ends in June 2017.
