LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 15-year-old Hawaiian monk seal known as R4DP was found dead recently on a Kauai beach, and officials say its death is suspicious.

The state said the endangered seal had injuries “inconsistent with any natural cause of death associated with wild monk seals.”

A necropsy has been ordered, but the oft-spotted seal is believed to be in good health.

It's the 11th monk seal that's died under suspicious circumstances since 2009.

But this is the first reported suspicious death of a monk seal since 2014.

There are only about 1,400 monk seals in the wild, and they're protected under federal and state law.

Like with many monk seals around the state, R4DP was familiar to researchers and scientists. She was tagged as a young adult seal on Kauai in summer 2008.

Anyone with information on the seal's desk is asked to call one of these hotlines: 1-800-853-1964 or 873-3990.
