HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kelii Akina has been elected as the at-large trustee for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, where he beat out long time OHA trustee and former chair, Haunani Apoliona. He has run for the office before, but this is his first time winning the seat as trustee.
I asked Dr. Akina about his quote of "OHA should not be in the business of nation building." Is that his top priority?
We also asked about his thoughts on blood quantum for Hawaiian homesteads, if he benefited from the non-Hawaiian vote and if he has had a chance to engage with his fellow trustees in the past.
Investiture for the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs will be at Central Union Church on December 9, 2016.
