KAILUA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Maui firefighters are searching for a 20-year-old man who fell into the ocean while hiking in the Kailua area.

The Maui Fire Department said the man, who’s a visitor, was hiking with three other people Tuesday afternoon at the Puka Maui Trail.

The man was last seen climbing up a steep, rocky cliff when he lost his footing and fell about 20 feet into the ocean or a blowhole near the water’s edge, MFD said.

Rescue crews did see the man’s body wash up onto the rocks and then get swept back into the ocean by the waves. They lost sight of him after that.

Crews will resume their search at first light on Wednesday.
