HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The University of Hawai‘i women’s basketball team opens the 2016-17 regular season this week with a trip to California to face USC on Nov. 11 and CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 13.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 1998 after winning the Big West Tournament in March. Hawai‘i returns five players from that team to go with nine newcomers in 2016-17. The Rainbow Wahine were picked to finish third in the Big West in 2016-17 by the media and fifth by the league’s head coaches.

Hawai‘i will be looking for its third consecutive win in a season-opener, and first all-time against the Trojans when it tips off at USC at 3:00 p.m. (HT) on Friday. The Rainbow Wahine are 0-4 all-time against USC and most recently met in 2013, a 66-55 loss in Los Angeles.

The Trojans are coming off a 19-13 season last year and return four starters and eight letter-winners from that team. Head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is 56-41 at USC entering her fourth season.

Hawai‘i wraps up the season-opening road trip at CSU Bakersfield with an 11:00 a.m. (HT) tip on Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine are 3-2 against the Roadrunners, including two wins by double-digit margins last season. CSU Bakersfield head coach Greg McCall is in his sixth season, and guided the team to a 12-19 record in 2015-16.

After the road trip, the Rainbow Wahine return home to host two tournaments, beginning with the Bank of Hawai‘i Classic Nov. 18-20, followed by the Rainbow Wahine Showdown Nov. 25-27.
