The University of Hawaii Cancer Center celebrated its 45th anniversary as it welcomes a new director.
The governor thanked Dr. Randall Holcombe Monday and wished him well as he takes over for interim director Jerris Hedges.
"I'm especially happy to have been brought in to lead the cancer center and to bring it to greater heights," Holcombe said. "Some of our short term goals would be to strengthen our community outreach programs and our cancer prevention programs."
The center is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of its National Cancer Institute designation.
Holcombe previously served as chief medical officer for Cancer at New York's Mount Sinai Health System.
