The nation's unemployment rate falls one tenth, from 5% to 4.9. Employers added 161,000 jobs last month. Average pay is up 2.8%, the biggest year-to-year improvement in seven years.

Hilton says it has hired 300 vets in three years to work at Hilton properties in Hawaii – and thousands nationwide – after announcing it wanted to offer vets career opportunities.

Oahu hotels 82% full last week – Maui 76, Kauai 72, Big Island 71 – with room rates 10% above last year at same time except on Oahu where increases were smaller.

Hawaiian Airlines’ Ohana division is returning to West Maui. Starting January 18 Ohana will fly two round trips between Honolulu and Kapalua from late morning to mid-afternoon. There will also be a morning run from Kahului to Kapalua and an afternoon run back.

The Kona Coffee Festival opens today. This makes 46 years they’ve had the festival, which now runs two weeks. Samuel Ruggles first imported coffee to Kona around 1828.

Two local lenders, American Savings Bank and Finance Factors, jointly hand $3,000 to Kupu, the youth and conservation nonprofit. It provided education and job training to 145 youth last year.

The Chamber of Commerce plans a Christmas party for members – December 2nd, a Friday, at Halekulani.
