AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta Sports Council has released the complete list of candidates for the 2016 Ray Guy Award with University of Hawai'i senior punter Rigoberto Sanchez making the list. It's the second straight year that Sanchez has been up for the award, given out annually to the top collegiate punter of the year.
Sanchez is among 66 candidates for the award. The list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists to be announced on Friday, November 11. Following the announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Sports Information Directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the three finalists who will be identified on Tuesday, November 22. The 2016 Ray Guy Award winner will be announced live on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 8.
Sanchez currently ranks 16th nationally, averaging 44.5 yards per punt. He's boomed 14 punts of 50 or more yards and pinned UH opponents inside their own 20-yard line on 14 occasions. For his career, he's averaging 44.9 yards per punt. If he maintains that rate he'll easily surpass Jason Elam's (43.5) school-mark for career punt average.
This is the third year in a row Hawai'i has a player receiving recognition from the Award committee. Scott Harding finished as a semifinalist in 2014.
Sanchez and the Rainbow Warriors travel to California this week for a meeting with Mountain West division-leading San Diego State at 1:00 p.m. HT. The game can be viewed live on CBS Sports Network - Oceanic Time Warner (Digital Ch. 247 and HD Ch. 1247) and Hawaiian Telcom Pay-Per-View (Ch. 83 and HD Ch. 1083).
