WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 73-year-old man is in critical condition after his propane barbecue grill exploded on the lanai of his Maui Meadows home Saturday.
He suffered burns to his arms and face area and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was later flown to Queen's Hospital for further treatment.
The man's tenant who lives at the front of the property was able to pull the homeowner off his lanai and onto the outside lawn.
The tenant then used a fire extinguisher to slow down the fire while the homeowner used a garden hose to help keep the fire from spreading to the roof.
Wailea firefighters responded to the explosion shortly after 1 o'clock and found the fire on the second floor of the residence. The fire was extinguished about three hours later.
The man's wife was in another part of the home when the suspected gas explosion occurred and was not injured.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
