A 40-year-old woman died in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday night in South Kona, Hawaii Island police said.
The woman was identified as Denise Scott, of Oceanview.
Authorities said Scott was driving her Nissan pickup truck south on Mamalahoa Highway when she veered off the shoulder of the roadway and struck a large tree just south of the 102 mile marker.
Scott was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police believe speed and inattention were factors in the crash. They are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine her exact cause of death.
Anyone with further information is asked to call police.
This is the 25th traffic fatality this year compared with 16 at this time last year.
