HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A 92-year-old woman was killed in a crash on Sunday in Hilo, Hawaii Island police said.
The woman was identified as Masako Okano, of Hilo.
Police said Okano was the front seat passenger of a Nissan sedan that was traveling north on Komohana Street. Around 12:20 p.m., a Ford pickup truck was going south on the same street and started to make a turn down Ponahawai Street. That’s when the two vehicles collided.
Both Okano and the 25-year-old driver of the sedan were taken to the Hilo Medical Center. Okano was pronounced dead around 4 p.m. The other woman was treated for her injuries and released.
The driver of the truck, a 28-year-old man from Oahu, was not injured.
Police do not believe alcohol was a factor, but are still investigating whether speed was a factor.
