A 19-year-old man died Sunday afternoon in waters off Sandy Beach, emergency officials said.
The Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Aiea resident Josiah Ramos.
According to Honolulu police, the man was body surfing and friends lost sight of him around 2:30 p.m.
Emergency Medical Services said the friends didn't report him missing until several hours later because they assumed he was somewhere else on the beach.
He was later found unresponsive under water, police said. The victim was brought to shore, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An EMS official said lifeguards were not on duty at the time since their shifts generally end at around 5:30 p.m.
A High Surf Advisory was in effect for east-facing shores over the weekend, with 5- to 8-foot surf.
The man has not yet been identified.
