HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Mayor Kirk Caldwell will appoint a former state Supreme Court justice to serve on Honolulu's embattled police commission.
Steven Levinson will take the place of current Police Commission Chairman Ron Taketa, whose term has expired.
Levinson served on the state's high court from 1992 to 2008, and was instrumental in the legalization of same sex marriage.
Levinson's appointment comes amid weakened trust in the commission over reports of office misconduct and a federal investigation involving Police Chief Louis Kealoha.
Levinson's appointment will require the approval of the City Council.
