AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Police say speed appears to be a factor in a deadly motorcycle crash on the H-1 freeway in Aiea on Thursday night.
The crash happened about 8 p.m., when two motorcyclists slammed into cars that had been involved in an earlier collision.
A third motorcyclist crashed while trying to avoid the wreck.
A 30-year-old motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet was taken in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The other two motorcyclists -- a 29-year-old man and a 35-year-old man -- were wearing helmets. The 29-year-old was in serious condition, while the 35-year-old was sent to a hospital in stable condition.
Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation.
The traffic fatality is the 42nd so far this year on Oahu, compared to 39 at the same time last year.
