Pedestrian dies following Hilo crash

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A pedestrian died after he was hit by a pickup truck in Hilo on Oct. 3, Big Island police said.

Police said a Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on Kilauea Avenue near the 500 block around 7:45 p.m. when it struck the pedestrian, who was not in a crosswalk.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was later transferred to the Queen's Medical Center on Oahu.

He was pronounced dead the following morning. An autopsy determined he died from his injuries from the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors for his role in the crash.

Police believe, however, that alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian.
