LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A mongoose captured at Lihue Airport early Tuesday has been euthanized.

The animal was caught after it was seen running out of an Aloha Air Cargo shipment of bread from Oahu, the state Agriculture Department said.

Mongoose aren't established on Kauai, though there have been sightings and two were captured on Kauai in 2012.

The animals are established on Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Hawaii Island and are a threat to native ground-nesting birds.

Animal traps have been placed at Lihue Airport following the incident.
