Worker dies at car wash in Lahaina

LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A worker died at a car wash in Lahaina on Monday morning, Maui County officials said.

The incident happened around 8:35 a.m. at Wash It Hawaii on Keawe Street.

Police said the worker, identified as 44-year-old Scott Kawabata, was trying to park a Hyundai at the exit when it suddenly reversed into the washing area. The vehicle crashed into the interior of the car wash several times, ejecting Kawabata from the vehicle. The Hyundai then crashed into a Nissan parked at the entrance.

Kawabata died at the scene.

The operator of the Nissan was not injured.

This is Maui County's 16th traffic fatality in 2016 compared to 18 this time last year.

Police are still investigating.
