HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - University of Hawai'i kicking specialist Rigoberto Sanchez was picked as the Mountain West's Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in the Rainbow Warriors' 34-17 victory over San Jose State Saturday in San Jose, Calif.
The Hamilton City, Calif., native was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goal attempts with makes of 24 and 35 yards and converted all four of his extra point tries. In addition, Sanchez punted six times for a 44.5 average. Two of his punts went for 50 yards or more while another two were downed inside the 20.
Thus far this season, Sanchez has made all five of his field goal attempts with a long of 55 and is 22-of-22 in PATs. He also ranks third in the MW and 14th nationally with a 45.0 punting average.
The weekly award is the first for a Rainbow Warrior this season and is Sanchez's first of his career.
Sanchez and the Rainbow Warriors will host UNLV, Saturday, Oct. 15 in their annual Homecoming Game on Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium. Kick-off is 6:05 p.m.
