MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Three Hawaiian Airlines baggage handlers have been arrested for allegedly stealing guns from the checked bags of law enforcement officers.

On Thursday, Maui police and federal agents arrested a 28-year old Wailuku man and a 52-year old Kihei man for first-degree theft.

A 29-year old Wailuku man was also arrested for third-degree theft.

All three have been released pending investigation, and are on leave without pay from Hawaiian Airlines.

A Maui Police Department spokesman says Hawaiian Airlines corporate security investigators reported the suspected thefts to police.

The first case apparently happened on June 24, when a state deputy sheriff had his firearm stolen from his suitcase while traveling from Los Angeles to Hilo with a layover in Kahului.

The second case happened on July 28, when an officer from Menlo, Calif. had his weapon stolen from his bags while traveling from Kahului to San Jose, Calif.

Law enforcement are allowed to pack guns in their luggage as long as they declare the weapons to airline and TSA officials.
