Washington Middle School math teacher Sung Man Park has been named the state's teacher of the year.
The announcement was made at a ceremony Friday at Washington Place.
"To me, teaching is the greatest and most honorable job in the whole world because we all can change other people's lives," Park said, after being named to the honor. "This is a great honor."
Park has taught in public schools for 12 years, and has coached Washington Middle's MATHCOUNTS team since 2010. Every year since, his team has won the state championship.
Park says his math knowledge is his great wealth -- and something he wants to share with students and fellow educators.
Hawaii's teacher of the year is selected annually from among eight district teacher finalists. Park will now go on to represent Hawaii in the national teacher of the year program.
As Hawaii teacher of the year, Park gets a $1,000 award and the use of a new car for a year.
