NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK (HawaiiNewsNow) -
As a powerful Hurricane Matthew makes its way toward the East Coast, the voyaging canoe Hokulea isn’t taking any chances.
The Hokulea is staying inland along the Hudson River.
Master navigator Nainoa Thompson said the crew purposely stayed north for several weeks, hoping to wait out the hurricane season. Once Matthew passes, they will sail down to Virginia as quickly as possible, where the Hokulea will be in dry dock for a few weeks.
The Hokulea departed on its worldwide voyage in May of 2014 and is expected to return in June 2017.
