PUNA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A hazmat team responded to an overnight steam release at the geothermal power plant in Puna.

An employee says the system malfunctions just before 3 a.m. Monday, just as it did on Thursday, September 29.

Tests came back negative for hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas with a rotten egg odor.

While Civil Defense says the leak was not threat to the public, it is monitoring the site as a precaution.
