KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A man died early Sunday after crashing his vehicle into a utility pole off Mamalahoa Highway in Honalo, according to Big Island police.
Police said the man was driving his Subaru station wagon south on the way, near the 114 mile marker, when he failed to make a turn in the roadway and crashed into the pole. He was ejected from the car and sustained critical injuries.
He was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead several hours later.
Police believe speed, inattention and alcohol were factors in the crash.
An autopsy will determine is identity and exact cause of death.
This was the 22nd traffic fatality this year compared with 15 at this time last year.
