PEARL CITY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The five hikers who called rescue crews for help while on the Waimano Trail in Pearl City managed to safely make their way out of the trail on their own, the Honolulu Fire Department said.
HFD said the three males and two females went hiking around 5 p.m. Sunday and were unable to continue as darkness fell. HFD crews were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. and arrived to the trailhead about 15 minutes later.
Crews were able to get in contact with the hikers via phone, and learned that they were in a safe location and not injured. However, due to unfavorable weather conditions, HFD determined that it would be safest to wait until Monday for weather conditions to improve. Crews instructed the hikers to shelter in place in the meantime.
HFD later learned that the hikers made their way out of the trail by midnight.
No injuries were reported.
