KAKAAKO (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A traditional Hawaiian blessing and the untying of a maile lei marked the opening of an affordable housing complex in Kakaako on Thursday.

The Flats at Puunui is a seven story housing complex with 88 units located on Keawe Street.

The complex is part of a 2008 master plan that aims to increase affordable housing units in Kakaako.

"This is our second project that's affordable rentals in Kakaako and that's an important factor for us to be in Kakaako where we think urban living in a new sustained lifestyle is really the wave of the future for us," said Jack Wong, CEO of Kamehameha Schools.

Each unit is awarded to renters who fall within Honolulu's median income.

This is the second of three projects in the works by Kamehameha Schools for local families.
