HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Hawaii longline fishing industry began handing out standardized contracts to owners of long-line fishing vessels in hopes of ending the controversy over allegations of human trafficking and forced labor.

The contracts require crew members and owners to agree they are getting fair pay and are being treated well.

Boats whose crews don't sign the contract by Oct. 1 won't be allowed to sell fish at the Honolulu Fish Auction.

Boat owners also want federal customs officials to make a public statement about whether there is abuse of workers or forced labor.
