HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii Electric Light has proposed a base rate increase to help cover rising operating costs.

The request for a 6.5 percent increase would generate an additional $19.3 million yearly.

If approved, a typical Hawaii Island household would pay about $9.31 more per month for a monthly bill of about $171.16.

The Public Utilities Commission is set to review the proposal, which wouldn't take effect until summer 2017 at the earliest.

The rate increase request is the first HELCO has made in six years.
