Local Connection: Two Hurricanes

Many prayers were answered last week when two threatening hurricanes each took a path that minimized damage to the islands.

It was good news – but sometimes good news can have the ironic result of making us complacent. And that would be a huge mistake.

It has been more than 20 years since we were last struck – by Hurricane Iniki.  Its easy to forget  what a storm like that can do…and how unpredictable they can be.  Iniki looked like it had passed harmlessly…until it made a hard right straight to Kauai.

Hurricane Lester last week was defying predictions -- getting stronger when it was expected to weaken – and ultimately sliding north of its expected path.

We are very proud of how our experienced weather team takes its duty to our community seriously…and works hard to keep you informed on all our platforms.  And you were watching – on air and on line.  As the storms approached our digital media traffic which is already in the millions per day – more than doubled.

We treasure that trust … and our role in keeping our community safe.  We can all do our part by always respecting the power of nature…and the safety that comes from remaining informed and prepared.
