Local Connection: Djou on Rail

Mayor candidate Charles Djou took a big political risk last week – by doing the right thing.

His sudden decision to abandon his anti-rail position and support the project as planned was seen as a flip-flop… and that's a fair description.

But it was a change grounded in reality.  He said he realized that big changes in the project he had been suggesting would cost Honolulu the support of the federal government…and the loss of 1.5 billion dollars.

Now – and this is huge -- both candidates for Mayor support building the entire 20-mile, heavy-rail project and are open to using additional tax money to pay for it.

That means voters now have an "Apples-to-apples" comparison. The choice is no longer whether or not we will have rail – but who is the better person to manage the mass transit project…and everything else the city does.
