A man was found unresponsive at a beach fronting the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on Uluniu Road in Kihei Friday afternoon.
The man, a Canadian visitor from Toronto, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The incident happened just before 4 p.m.
Kihei firefighters say the man, 68, became separated from his board after he fell while windsurfing.
A family member went to meet the man further down the shoreline fronting the hall and saw him floating face down about 70 yards from shore.
Bystanders pulled the man to shore and performed CPR while they awaited help.
The man is also a part-time resident of Kihei.
