WEATHER: Severe weather alerts issued for Maui, Big Island

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Several weather alerts have been issued across the state as wet weather lingers over the island chain.

A very moist, unstable air mass is interacting with an upper level trough and resulting in unsettled weather with the potential of flash flooding. The following alerts may be extended if heavy rain persists:

Maui County 

  • A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Monday afternoon.

Big Island

  • A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Monday afternoon.
  • A Flood Advisory is in effect until 7 a.m.
    • At 4 a.m., radar showed heavy rain from Kailua-Kona to Hilo, with rain falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
