Five Hawaii math and science teachers get presidential award

WASHINGTON, D.C. (HawaiiNewsNow) - Five Hawaii teachers were honored by the White House on Friday as among 213 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The teachers also received Congressional certificates from U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii.

The Hawaii awardees are:

  • Alicia Nakamitsu, Aiea High School
  • Eliza Yoshida, Puu Kukui Elementary School
  • Stan Mesina, August Ahrens Elementary School
  • Bryan Silver, Kalani High School
  • Patricia Urasky, Waimea High School (awarded for her work in Wyoming)

The outstanding math and science teachers were selected from applicants across the country.

On Thursday, in a special ceremony, the awardees received a signed citation from President Barack Obama and $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.
