'Hero and Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll' to honor fallen service members

Tripler Fisher House: Hero & Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The founder of the event the Hero & Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll joined Sunrise this morning. Teresa Johnson says it's been a popular family event in the last 4 years and she hopes the 5th will be even better. Here is some of the information she provided about how the free event supports our service members and their families:

Honolulu – The Tripler Army Medical Center's Fisher House will hold the 5th Annual 8K Hero & Remembrance Run on September 10, 2016.  This event is held on historic Ford Island and honors over 7000 fallen Service Members from all Branches who have given their lives since 9/11.

The Fisher House is proud to announce that this is a "no cost" event in honor of the Fallen Service Members who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

There will be numerous boots with pictures of Fallen Service Members on them and flags inside that will line the 8K running route. Once the event is over, the boots will be reassembled on the corner of Enterprise & O'Kane streets on Historic Ford Island and will stay on display until September 17, 2016 for those with base access. This will allow everyone an opportunity to look through the boots to find the names and pictures of loved ones. This visual representation of our nation's commitment and the sacrifice of our service members all in one location is something that no one will want to miss seeing.  Bring a camera to take photos of this memorial as the public will only see on September 10 unless they can gain base access through the Nimitz Gate Visitor's Center..

Military and Civilian leaders of the community will participate in the opening ceremonies and the run.  The MC for the event is Augie T, one of Hawaii's favorite award winning comedians.  Hawaii radio stations, Power 104.3, Hawaiian 105.1 KINE, KRATER96 and FM100 will broadcast live from the event and throughout the run.

Everyone is highly encouraged to come out and support this event in any capacity you can. The run is not a timed event; we welcome spectators along the route to wave flags and cheer folks on. We will need volunteers for several locations.

Registration Website: http://www.eventbrite.com

This event is opened to the public.

All access to Ford Island will be easily accessible from 0400-1000 on September 10, 2016.

Since this is a military installation everyone including all non-military ID card holders are subject to search per base regulations.

All parking will be on Ford Island as directed when you come across the bridge. Due to the amount of anticipated participants carpooling and buses are recommend. There is no cost for parking. You should plan to arrive by 0500 to ensure access to base before the bridge closes. There will be an opening ceremony at 0630.

We will have the "Patriot Guard" style escort and motorcycle riders lead off the run. Motorcycle clubs are welcome to join us but all riders will have to have proper vehicle paperwork per base regulations, no exceptions. Motorcycle riders have to comply with DoD motorcycle guidance (helmet, need long sleeves, sturdy over ankle footwear, long pants, etc).

Military units in formation will form up on the inside of the field, once the Motorcycle Riders lead off, hand bikes, wheelchairs and Wounded Warriors next, military units will fall in followed by the rest of the participants, with strollers and other wheels at the end.

All wheelchairs, hand bikes, stroller, roller skates, roller blades, wagons, and small children's bikes are welcome. Please no adult bikes except for the rear follow up riders. Friendly pets are welcome on a leash, be prepared to clean up after them.

Shirts will be available for pre-order purchase online for $18 or $20 at the event, limited quantities available.

Bottled water will be available, no snacks provided.
