KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One man died and another was seriously injured when a car plowed head-on into a large work truck in Kalihi on Thursday morning.
Police said a 1994 Ford Mustang, driven by a 24-year-old man, was traveling on North School Street about 9:36 a.m. when it crossed into an oncoming lane to try to pass vehicles stopped for a pedestrian.
The Mustang collided head-on with a large work truck, driven by a 33-year-old Kailua man.
The passenger in the Mustang, 36-year-old Kaleo Kaio, was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center. He later died.
The driver of the Mustang remains hospitalized.
Police shut down North School Street between Aupuni and Lanakila streets while they investigated.
This is the 39th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 33 at the same time last year.
