HONOLULU (AP) - Federal officials are holding a series of public meetings on their proposal to prohibit swimmers and boats from getting within 50 yards of Hawaii spinner dolphins.

The National Marine Fisheries Service has already held two meetings on the Big Island's Kona Coast.

This week, meetings are planned for Lihue and Kihei. There are meetings scheduled for the last week of the month on Oahu.

Officials say swimmers and vessels are depriving the dolphins of badly needed rest during the day and stressing out the animals.
