KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 11-year-old boy was critically injured Wednesday afternoon after he was hit by a large truck while riding his bike in Kalihi.

The crash happened about 1:35 p.m., when the boy was on his way home from school.

Police shut down all southbound lanes of Waiakamilo Road for several hours to investigate the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Waiakamilo and King streets. Houghtailing Street was also closed in the makai direction.

Witnesses say an industrial-sized truck and the boy collided in the intersection. A woman quickly stopped her car to run to the boy's aid.

First responders say the boy was taken to a trauma center in critical condition.

The roads were reopened a few hours later.
