HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Big Island authorities are investigating after a motorcyclist struck a pedestrian in Hilo, leaving both people dead.
Police say the woman was hit Saturday night after exiting a vehicle that left the scene and walking into the roadway. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was taken to a hospital where she later died.
The motorcyclist has been identified as 66-year-old Lionel Chartrand, of Hilo. He also died at a hospital.
Chartrand was not wearing a helmet and police believe that speed was a factor in the crash.
Officers have opened a negligent homicide investigation.
The Saturday night deaths have brought the Big Island's total number of traffic fatalities this year to 19, up from 15 at the same last year.
