HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Honolulu firefighter was injured during a rescue atop Diamond Head on Friday morning.

Firefighters were airlifting a hiker off the trail about 9:50 a.m. when the helicopter's rescue basket hit a utility pole. The firefighter was thrown from the basket and fell about 30 feet to the ground below.

The patient in the basket was not dislodged, and was lifted to the helicopter without incident.

Honolulu Fire Chief Manuel Neves said the firefighter who fell was airlifted separately and taken to a hospital, where he is reported to be alert and in stable condition.

Neves said the incident is under investigation.
