HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A woman in her 70s died in a vehicle crash on the Likelike Highway Thursday morning, Honolulu police said.

The crash happened around 8:55 a.m.

According to HPD Lt. Carlene Lau, 72-year-old Ione Adams of Kaneohe was driving her Honda Pilot in the makai-bound direction near School Street when she crossed over the center median into the mauka-bound lane of the highway and hit a Toyota 4Runner.

Emergency Medical Services treated Adams and transported her to the hospital in critical condition. However, she later died at the hospital, police said.

Lau said the driver of the 4Runner, a woman in her 40s, suffered minor injuries.

Speed may be a factor, but it does not appear that alcohol is involved.

Police closed all northbound lanes of Likelike Highway from School Street during the investigation. All lanes were reopened around 10:40 a.m.
