Flood Advisory expires for Hawaii Island

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - [Update 9/1/16]

The Flood Advisory has expired.

The Big Island is under a Flood Advisory until 5 p.m. as heavy rains from Tropical Storm Madeline move onshore.

At 1:53 p.m., rain gauges showed heavy rains in Hilo and Puna, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

More heavy rain is expected over the eastern slopes of the Big Island over the next several hours.

Locations in the advisory include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honomu, Keaau, Pahoa, Pahala, Hawaiian Acres and Mountain View.

Forecasters advise staying away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
