HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Federal transit officials are telling city leaders Oahu's rail route has to go all the way to Ala Moana.

And the federal government doesn't plan to provide any more funding for the beleaguered project, besides the $1.5 billion they've already pledged.

The Federal Transit Administration took the hard line Tuesday at a meeting in San Francisco with Honolulu's mayor council chair, and rail board members.

"They said if you end this project at Middle Street, you will put in jeopardy the $1.4 billion," said Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation Chairwoman Colleen Hanabusa.

"I think they made it loud and clear that they want to see a functional system and that's what we all are working towards."

There's no word on whether the FTA would provide a loan to complete the project. The rail system is almost half built and facing a $1 billion shortfall.
