Emergency shelters no longer open on the Big Island

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii County emergency shelters opened on Tuesday as Tropical Storm Madeline headed toward the state. but all were closed on Thursday as the threat from Madeline passed.

Some 198 people across the Big Island stayed in shelters on Wednesday. 

Hawaii County Civil Defense and the American Red Cross of Hawaii partnered to staff the shelters. They were located at:

  • Hilo High 
  • Honokaa High & Intermediate 
  • Kalanianaole Elementary
  • Kau High & Elementary 
  • Keaau High 
  • Kealakehe High 
  • Kohala High & Elementary 
  • Konawaena High 
  • Laupahoehoe High 
  • Mountain View Elementary 
  • Pahoa High
  • Waiakea High 
  • Waikoloa Elementary 
  • Waimea Intermediate
