Jersey City, New Jersey (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hokulea left Jersey City, New Jersey Saturday headed to the Great Lakes and Canada.

The Hokulea will sail north, up the Hudson River to Lake Ontario, up the Saint Lawrence River past Montreal and then south, back to Jersey City.

This trip is leg 23 of the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage and will be the furthest north the crew has traveled. This leg will take crew until October to reach Jersey City and then the crew will head back down the eastern seaboard on their way back to Hawaii.

Exploration is core to what we do, which is why we are sailing Hokulea to waters where we never imagined she could go," said Nainoa Thompson, president of the Polynesian Voyaging society and pwo (master) navigator. "Because of Canada's lock system and other complexities, the voyaging team has spent months preparing for this leg by researching and studying these waterways.”

The voyage launched in May of 2014 and is expected to return to Hawaii in June of 2017.
