VOLCANO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An 18-year-old man died after a single-vehicle crash Friday night, the Hawaii Police Department said.

He has been identified as Lucas Derego, of Mountain View. An autopsy has been ordered to determine his exact cause of death.

Highway 11 was closed in both directions around 10:30 p.m. Friday as the Hawaii Police Department investigated the crash near North Glenwood Road.

Hawaii County firefighters arrived to the crash site to find a man pinned in a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Derego was driving in the Hilo-bound direction and had struck a rock retaining wall. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

Police believe speed was a factor, but it is unclear of drugs or alcohol were involved.

Reports say the mid-sized vehicle had extensive front end damage that intruded into the cab. Debris was found scattered across the highway.
