HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dogs rescued from a Kahaluu puppy mill need loving homes.

Nineteen of the roughly 33 rescued dogs and puppies (along with other canines) will be available for adoption at a special event at the Ala Moana Center on Saturday.

The adoption event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. on the third floor of the mauka wing, near Vera Bradley.

To avoid long lines, interested pet owners will be randomly selected to meet and greet the dogs and puppies. Overnight camping is not permitted.

The Kahuluu puppy mill was discovered in May. Police were called to the scene after James Montgomery, 68, allegedly put a live dog and a dead dog inside a city trash bin for collection.

The dogs and puppies were reportedly living in unsanitary conditions.

Montgomery was later indicted on animal cruelty charges.

The dogs and puppies rescued in Kahaluu were surrendered to the Hawaiian Humane Society after months of foster care.

For more adoption information, call the humane society at 356-2225.
