From greeting strangers as “aunty” or “uncle,” to a friendly wave or shaka to let someone in front of you while driving, Hawai‘i remains unique and beautiful because of its people and their practice of aloha.

The Aloha Festivals’ mission is to foster the aloha spirit through the perpetuation of our unique culture and the diverse customs and traditions of Hawai?i. In honor of this mission and tradition, this year’s Aloha Festivals will recognize those individuals who epitomize aloha. Hawai‘i residents are invited to nominate a deserving friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker, a person who embodies the aloha spirit in our Island community, as the Aloha Festivals’ Spirit of Aloha Honoree.

ALOHA, as interpreted by Pilahi Paki, captures the essence of its meaning.

A   AKAHAI – Kindness – expressed with tenderness.

L   LOKAHI – Unity – expressed with harmony.

O   'OLU'OLU – Agreeable – expressed with pleasantness.

H   HA'AHA'A – Humility – expressed with modesty.

A   AHONUI – Patience – expressed with perseverance.

The aloha spirit runs through every peak and valley to remind us that we, as kindred spirits, should continue to exercise respect, love and care for each other. Life in Hawai‘i would be nothing without these traits, these individual practices of aloha.

“Aloha includes sharing without any desire for reciprocity. In concert with Spirit, the Aloha Spirit has come to mean unconditional love,” said Jay Talwar, Aloha Festivals’ board member. “The Aloha Spirit is alive and well in Hawai‘i and we look forward to celebrating the individual who exemplifies and represents this island identity as the Spirit of Aloha honoree.”

Nominations are now being accepted for the Spirit of Aloha Award at the Aloha Festivals’ website (www.alohafestivals.com) or at any O‘ahu Longs Drugs store. Residents should submit their nominations by Wednesday, August 31, describing in 300 words why their nominee deserves the Spirit of Aloha Award. Examples depicting the nominee’s aloha spirit must be within the last five years.

The top three nominations will be posted to the Aloha Festivals’ website for viewing and public voting from September 8 to 12. The Spirit of Aloha honoree will be contacted during the week of September 12. Nominees must be a resident of the State of Hawai‘i.

The Spirit of Aloha honoree will be announced at the Waikiki Ho‘olaule‘a on Saturday, September 17 and will participate in the Aloha Festival’s Floral Parade on Saturday,

September 24. In addition, the honoree also will receive a two-night stay for two at the Hilton Waikoloa Village with airfare courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines. The honoree’s nominator will receive a $250 Pearlridge Center gift card and a $250 Royal Hawaiian Center gift card.
