HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress in Honolulu won't just have a tremendous impact on traffic.

McKinley High, which is near all the action, is cancelling classes Thursday for the opening session.

A letter sent home to parents on Monday says the school will be closed to allow security officials to use the campus for emergency purposes.

Several McKinley High School students said they were happy that there’s no school for the day, but a lot of parents feel otherwise.

"I think the hardest thing is not knowing,” said Joni Tanuvasa-Letisi, a parent. “Parents have schedules and work and other kids and other commitments, so it would be helpful if we were given a little bit more forewarning."

Elyjah Badua, quarterback for McKinley High School’s football team, said the day lost hurts students.

"I think it's taking away from our school system,” he said.“We have to change our schedule just because the president is coming."

McKinley High athletic and extracurricular activities on campus will also be canceled for the day.
